The Fiat Cinquecento, People's Car of Italy...

Small, practical, durable, and cute as a "bug"... well, actually cuter than a "bug".  That's the Fiat cinquecento, or Fiat 500.  Fiat made almost four million of them from 1957 to 1975, and it seems most of them are still on the road in Southern Italy.  They make as much sense today as they did in the 1950s and 60s, when Italy was getting back on its feet after the terrible destruction it suffered in World War II. The cars were so named because they had 500cc engines... the first ones produced a whopping 13 horsepower.

Here are a few photos of cinquecentos we've seen on the streets in our travels...
Great color...

Sporty wheels...

Can I go to this school...
This is the "Nuova" 500, produced from 1957-1960...

Two-tone... !
Here is a station wagon version of the cinquecento, known as the Giardiniera...

We visited a couple of Fiat dealerships.  This one had a display pairing the old with the new...

A wink from "red"...

And I have to ask, will this one fit in my suitcase...?

I guess if you have to ask...
