Sicily had one last sorpressa (surprise) in store for us...the morning of our departure from Palermo, our friend Carmelo texted us to say that an eight hour air traffic controllers strike had been called for that day...really ?? Our airline, Vueling, e-mailed us advising that we needed to come to the airport to check in as if the flight were leaving on time...which it wasn't...
We went to the Palermo airport at 1pm and the Vueling counter said "open"...which it wasn't...
By 2pm, many Italian hand gestures had been made by those Sicilians standing in line with us. We were finally allowed to check in at about 3pm for the flight that was scheduled to leave at 3:30...which it didn't...it was rescheduled for 7:30pm, making one wonder why we had to be at check in at 1pm...go figure...
We were given a voucher for a "snack", and when we presented it at a concession stand, the man behind the counter looked at it as if he had never seen such an item before. He made several phone calls, spoke to his co-workers for a bit, gestured with his hands a bit, then gave us each a panino and a drink...just to send us on our way I think !
At about 5pm, we decided to wander over to our assigned gate...good thing we did because the flight was boarding ! The departure signs all still said 7:30pm, but we actually took off at 6pm...you really can't make this up...the chaos of Sicily never ends !
Arriving at the beautiful Barcelona airport was like a breath of fresh air...it was clean, organized, and there were toilet seats in the bathrooms (and toilet paper !!). We picked up our Kia rental car and drove about 25 minutes to our hotel outside the city. Hotel Desitges was modern, stylish, and very welcoming. The lovely young woman at reception offered to make us a platter of Spanish hams, cheeses, salami, tomatoes and breads. Along with a bottle of Rioja wine, we were set for the night. We got to our room at about 10:30pm to find a welcome gift of chocolates and a "happy anniversary" note...
Here are photos of the hotel...
So far, we really like Spain !!
